About the Artwork
Trade built cities. Exchange built empires.
Capital Exchange reflects Detroit’s long history as a crossroads of labor, culture, and opportunity. Immigrants arrived with little but ambition, trading skill, sweat, and ideas in a city that rewarded those willing to work.
Set against authentic vintage financial certificates tied to Detroit’s industrial era, the artwork connects the movement of people with the movement of capital. A central figure stands confidently between symbols of tradition and wealth, surrounded by floating currency — a reminder that opportunity often follows those willing to move, build, and trade.
The piece echoes the broader narrative behind the Breaking Borders exhibit: Detroit as a place where cultures collide, exchange value, and create new forms of prosperity.
